Nationalism

Nationalism is comprised of five major elements; language, territory, culture, economic interest, and a shared history. I believe for the most part we all share the same language. Yes when people immigrate they might not know much English but they learn it or it’s their second language. This makes our country nationalistic by having our one common language. Next is territory, this meaning we are all one nation. This is held true, our nation is comprised of the fifty states. No Alaska and Hawaii are not necessarily connected to the main area however they are still under the laws and in USA's territory. We are not all split up with different rules. Next is culture, this is where our nationalism lacks because we are a country comprised of all different cultures. America's called the "melting pot" for God's sake. On the other hand this shows that we can all live together despite different cultures and traditions. This is what makes America unique and special. The fact that we can have all different people that immigrated and brought their culture with them and how we are still influenced today. For example I'm Polish, Hungarian, German, and French. My mom's side is all Polish and at Christmas we do the Christmas wafer. It is a tradition back for the old country to signify a blessing into the New Year. No one makes fun or there is no negativity towards this tradition showing how we can all live together. Next is economic interest. An example is that we are all money motivated. Even people who are into drugs want money so they can buy it. We tend to measure success on money as well. Also because of the recession are focus has turned onto economics even harder then times before. Making sure we have our resources such as gas, and now that gas prices are going u everyone in our country is affected. One more element of nationalism is a shared history. Our countries history is pretty remarkable however everyone that lives here today's history has not all been the same. This doesn't necessarily mean we are not nationalistic though it just means that we are a country that comes from all different places. Therefore I believe that if a country can figure out how to combine all different people it’s great and nationalism has prevailed in history however if countries cannot get along then it’s not meant to be. All in all I believe history has a love hate relationship with nationalism.
