Challenges for women in Todays society

There are many challenges that women face today that men do not have to deal with.  Most of these challenges relate to jobs and income.  When women get married and eventually have children they have to take time off, sometimes unexpectedly. Because of these reasons women don’t always get the job because they aren’t always dependable. Also, for this reason women don’t get paid as much as men do. Women right out of college make 23 percent less than their male colleges make. This was just astounding to me. Researches also have found that the few women who are quite successful are under 30 years of age, are NOT married, and have NO children. This also can mean that these women may never have any of the things such as a marriage or children. Furthermore because men cannot have children to have to take time off for, (although some men do), they become more dependable to the employer as opposed to a woman. So this is the major challenge for women in today’s society. Although women’s rights have progressed since the start of early feminist like Mary Wollstonecraft. Women before then didn’t have the right to vote let alone have a steady salary or even job. Women were looked at as things to stand and look pretty next to their husbands. Therefore, women have come a long way in their rights however, they still have similar and tougher challenges today.

Hobbes and Locke: Compare and Contrast

V.
In the age of enlightenment two major names surface they are Thomas Hobbes and John Locke.  In this age they were trying to put a reason to the way things were in everyday life. They also looked at things like government. Thomas Hobbes wrote about his views on government in the book Leviathan. His stance on people and human nature for that matter were that people in an essence are selfish and greedy. He had this theory because of his views from the English civil war. He even said that people’s lives would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” He also believed that people would give up their own personal right to be safe and at peace. Hobbes believed in a social contract which meant an absolute monarchy so that their central power could rule all. However John Locke concurred with Thomas Hobbes theory. Locke believed that people were naturally happy and reasonable. He stated that people were all born with “natural rights of life, liberty, and property.” He viewed government as something that protected people’s natural rights. Locke sought fairness in law and even government. Locke’s ideas even gave Europe and American revolutionaries the inspiration. I would have to say that looking at both gentlemen’s theories is would side with Locke. This is because of the fact that I believe as well as Locke that people have natural god given rights and that government cannot take that away from someone.

Civil Liberties

I believe that one major civil liberty that should never be changed is freedom of speech. We are a privileged country to have this right. We as a people don’t always recognize how important it really is until we see on the news another country that does not have this right. Countries without this liberty cannot speak out against their ruler or anything that goes against what their ruler’s views are. If they do punishment can be as brutal as death. So this is one right that can never be changed because it has too much meaning and if it were to change we would have some serious problems.  However, one civil liberty that I wouldn’t mind if it changed is the right to bear arms. This is one right that concerns me in some regards. One major problem with this right is how many people that are killed by guns per years…it’s staggering. Also the fact that those people who died lives could have been saved if it wasn’t a right. The right could even be modified that anyone who has a gun must take a safety class and that these classes are being taught correctly. In addition people who are not physically and mentally able to have guns or any fire arm should not have this right. This is primarily a safety right and right now I believe that it is not very safe.  All in all the liberty of freedom of speech should not be changed but, the right to bear arms should for the given reasons.
